THOUGHTS:

Gena Showalter introduces her Lords of the Underworld – a band of immortal warriors who used to protect Pandora and her box. But, after certain misdeeds, ended up inhabited by the demons inside the box. (Showalter puts her own spin on mythology as she was dissatisfied with Pandora being blamed for everything.)

The Lords live in Budapes, near humans but not exactly among them. They must protect their secret, themselves, and the humans. The first Lord introduced in Maddox who is possessed by the demon of Violence. Because of his actions towards Pandora and involvement in the opening of the box, Maddox is cursed. He is doomed to die every night – a painful death.

Ashlyn Darrow is human, but she hears voices. She has been institutionalized since she was five years old because of this.Yes, the voices are in her heard. BUT, she only hears past conversations held in a room. She can’t read thoughts or anything else. Seeking help with her curse, Ashlyn searches for the secret castle in Budapest rumored to be the home of gods capable of curing her.

The Lords (there’s a whole group of them. A big, fun, manly, three-dimensional, cursed group of men), particularly Maddox, are suspicious of the human who stumbled into the forest surrounding their sanctuary. There are Hunters – humans determined to wipe out the Lord because they think all the evil in the world is a result of the Lords – who play the “weak, lost, damsel-in-distress” in order to kill the Lords.

This book is a stand along, telling Ashlyn and Maddox’s journey. But, it is also an introduction to the Lords of the Underworld series.

Maddox is big, strong, violent, and hot. He’s kind towards Ashlyn, then does a 180 when he’s with the other Lords.

Ashlyn just wants the voices to stop. Which only happens when she’s near Maddox…a man determined a kick her out of his life.

There are a lot of paranormal and mythological elements, particularly Greek mythology. Pandora, the Lords, the gods, (other creatures).

It’s a fun adventure romance. Showalter’s writing is crisp, witty, and clear. (I also think she’s a bit crazy because she turns out like 4 books a year!)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
